Shopping on Fifth Avenue

Since I moved to New York, shopping has become very convenient. Most of it is done online and delivered to my doorstep. I love how easy it is to order and get the items the next day, especially groceries and household necessities like toilet tissue, zip-lock bags and dishwasher detergent — the stuff you use all the time. I also love how big everything is in the US — giant paper towel rolls and gallons of milk. 

It’s also convenient to order extra sizes when shopping for clothing, then to try them on at home. It’s easy to return the size that doesn’t fit. When getting new things, though, I still prefer to visit shops for inspiration and see the clothing in real life.

On Fifth Avenue, you can find a wide selection of shops that I like to visit side by side. Below 23rd street, down to 16th street, you find brands like Madewell, J. Crew, Aveda, Gap, Strand Books, Sephora, Cole Haan and, my favorite, Nike Running. A good place to have a break is the coffee bar Toby’s Estate between 20th and 21st Street on Fifth Avenue. While enjoying your coffee you can take a stroll in the book store Strand and enjoy the beautiful flowers by Polux Fleuriste — the place to buy flowers in New York.

If you turn on 18th street onto Broadway you find Paragon Sports. Don’t be mistaken by its very old-fashioned look. You can find equipment for all sports here — very cool. In the basement you will find a big selection of running goods. 

One block up on Broadway, on the corner of 19th street and Broadway, you find Fishs Eddie: a store filled with china and home goods with an old kitschy, diner style. When we moved here I replaced some of the glasses, bowls and other small items we had left at home with some of the items from Fishs Eddie. A fun store to visit.
