Shinola and Nili Lotan

I love my Tribeca neighborhood and it’s industrial history. It was once the epicenter of New York’s food industry and the echoes of its industrial past are still present in its huge loft buildings, iron sidewalks, ramps for loading and unloading, awnings and of course, the cobblestones.

Sometimes when I’m running errands in Tribeca I find myself diverted, drawn to new discoveries. You need to stay curious and keep your eyes open in this part of town or you may miss out on some very cool spots. On Franklin, between Greenwich and Hudson, you’ll find Shinola, and The Smile Newsstand sharing a beautiful location. The Smile Newsstand is actually a great café and I love to enjoy a tea there while I read the magazines they have hanging around the walls. The Smile has several branches around the city and serves nice baked treats.

Shinola is the New York outpost of a relatively new company based in Detroit. It is best known for handsome, well-made but affordable watches, but they also make bicycles, leather goods and various other items. They are named after a brand of shoe polish from the first half of the twentieth century that is most well-known in America for the saying, “You don’t know shit from Shinola,” When the founders of the new company wanted a name that signaled heritage and quality, they acquired the defunct name.

Duane Street is one of my favorite streets in Tribeca and one you may recognize as it is often used for locations in movies and television shows. Here you can also find Nili Lotan, the eponymous outpost for the Israeli fashion designer. It was one of the first shops I visited when moving to New York and it’s a place I keep coming back to, as her style is very timeless and cool. The space itself is beautifully designed and it’s worth a visit just to experience it.
